Back up and memory depletion

Started using backup on D.
last week.
Using a file named "my backup".
Within 4 days started getting a critical shortage of memory message.
Tried deleting all available files.
No avail.
Cannot locate "my Backup".
Want to use an external driver with 1T.
Using the 1T device is obvious but how do I delete the existing backup on D.
