I have the following field in my document: SEQ Figure \#"'Figure '0'.
'"
The idea is to automatically add the word "Figure," followed by the number, followed by a "." and then a tab character.
As you can see though, Word automatically replaces my tab character with a space.
 How can I add the tab character?


On a related note, how can I search for fields and edit their contents?  I'm aware that ^19 will allow me to search for fields, but I'm not sure how to then edit just the contents of a field...
 So if I wanted to search for the field above, I think I'd
Find: ^19 SEQ Figure \#"'Figure '0'.
'"

But then I have 2 problems:
1 - ^19 only appears to work without wildcards.
 Is there a replacement when wildcards are selected?
2 - How do I replace the contents of the fields?  I suppose I could just replace the entire field by searching for the field that I need and having it replace the entire thing with whatever I have in the clipboard, but I'd like to have a little more
control, and I still have a problem if I try to insert a tab character (e.g.
Find: SEQ Figure \#"'Figure '0'.(space)  Replace: ^&^t doesn't work)

I apologize if this seems convoluted.
 I'm at my wits end on this and still need to finish writing the report which is already pretty long.

I don't see Word 2007 replacing tabs with spaces in SEQ field codes, so I'm not sure of the origin of your problem.

Be that as it may, you should be able to replace the field codes without specifically searching for the fields.
The following works for me:

Press Alt+F9 to display all the field codes in the document.Copy the SEQ Figure \#"'Figure '0'.
'" from any SEQ field code.
Avoid selecting the field markers and get just the code.
In the Replace dialog, paste that field code into the Find What box.
Paste it again into the Replace With box, then delete the offending space and type in ^t in its place.Click the Replace All button, and close the dialog.Press Alt+F9 to collapse all the field codes.
Press Ctrl+A to select the whole document, and press F9 to update all fields.

You should now find tabs in the Figure SEQ fields.

Running System Update Readiness Command

On running the System Update readiness Command, it will Detect & Replace Incorrect Registry data with the Correct one. Which may ultimately Solve adding a tab character to fields, and search/replace issues with fields in Windows.

1. Open CMD as Administrator by Simply Right Clicking on Start button > Command Prompt (Admin).
2. Now Type or Copy paste "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Scanhealth" and hit Enter,
3. Now again Type or Copy paste this "DISM.exe /Online /Cleanup-image /Restorehealth" and hit Enter.
4. Close the Command Prompt Window because we are done.

Try and see if you still get the same error adding a tab character to fields, and search/replace issues with fields in your Windows.

Note: You may be prompted to enter your administrator's password when you try to execute certain system tasks!
